A new fly-through video released by State College Area School District on Friday gives a virtual tour of the design plans for the renovations and additions to Radio Park Elementary School Elementary School.

Radio Park is one of three major elementary school renovation and construction projects in the district currently in the design phase. Corl Street Elementary also will have renovations and additions and Lemont Elementary will merge with Houserville in a new K-5 building at the Houserville site.

All three are currently at the 90 percent design stage and fly-throughs for each were shown at Monday's school board meeting where the plans were reviewed.

Radio Park has two possibilities included in the planning. Additions and renovations with three classrooms per grade would result in 80,173 square feet. An alternate bid with four classrooms per grade would add 8,865 square feet of classroom space to the project total. The estimated cost for the base bid is $21.1 million and $22.58 million for the alternate bid, according to design firm Crabtree Rohrbaugh and Associates. Grants and projected reimbursements from the state would bring district costs to $18.1 million for base bid or $19.29 million for the alternate.

The fly-through video includes the alternate for additional classrooms. District administrators have said during the planning process, including at Monday's meeting, that if the alternate bid isn't selected, it's possible that 120 to 140 students could be displaced for part of the 2018-19 school year because of the limited amount of space for temporary trailers on the site during the construction phases.

No determination has yet been made on if that will in fact be necessary. If it is, officials are still considering their options. Houserville and Corl Street would be off the table because they will be undergoing construction at the same time. Park Forest Elementary is under consideration, but already has the largest student population.

A community forum will be held at 7 p.m. on Aug. 17 in the Panorama Village Administrative Center boardroom for residents to review the 90 percent plans.

The board is expected to vote on the plans at its Aug. 28 meeting. The current project calendar calls for bids to be awarded on Nov. 13. Construction is expected to begin in January 2018 and be completed in the summer of 2019.
