The national American Legion organization is looking to inventory all memorials dedicated to veterans in the U.S.
Centre County currently is finishing up its list of local memorials with the help of local veterans and volunteers, said Sue Hannegan, assistant director of the county planning office.
No one war is being focused upon in the nationwide-inventory, according to the Legion. The group also is looking for information on the condition of each memorial.
In a press release, the Legion outlined its criteria for submission:
■ Location of the memorial, mapped if possible
■ Purpose of the memorial, such as who it honors and why, in just a sentence or two
■ Date of the memorial’s installation and who originally installed it
■ A brief assessment of its condition today
■ A photo or photos, easily taken with a smart phone
So far, Hannegan said the county has identified 25 memorials, with suggestions from locals coming in as late as Nov. 13. She said when the list is released to the public, the county will be looking for any memorials it may have missed. There are an additional 29 memorials at the Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg.
Hannegan credited the community for its help in both locating and documenting efforts.
