Saquon Barkley was not named a Heisman finalist. The final three of Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson and Stanford running back Bryce Love will head to New York for the award presentation this coming weekend.
By all accounts the award is Mayfield's to win, and Barkley would have had a long road with his solid but not necessarily elite stats. Barkley finishes the regular season 34th in the nation in rushing yards per game with 94, Bryce Love finishes in the same category with 164 yards per contest. However Barkley is second in all-purpose yards.
There is no doubt Barkley was the front-runner for the award much of the season, but the Nittany Lions' struggles on the field against Ohio State and Michigan State coupled with defenses targeting Barkley extensively were his undoing for the honor.
Barkley is still a finalist for the Maxwell Award which is given to the nation's best player.
