Ferguson Township has an open seat on its Board of Supervisors as Ward III Supervisor Sara Spock Carlson decided to step down from the role after one year.
Carlson said it was a difficult decision, but that because of ongoing health issues she could not continue to effectively serve the township.
"I’m thankful to the residents of Ward III, the township at large, my fellow board members and the staff of Ferguson Township for their expertise, support and understanding," she said. "My year of public service gave me a new appreciation for those who serve. I hope to return to our local government in the future."
The board will formally accept her resignation at its meeting on Monday.
The remainder of Carlson's term ends on Dec. 31 and her successor will be the fourth Ward III supervisor in a four-year term that began in January 2016. After Colleen Unroe was elected to the seat and withdrew, Rita Graef was appointed to fill the position until the next municipal election. Carlson then ran unopposed in the 2017 general election and took office for a two-year interim term in January 2018.
Ferguson Township is now accepting applications for the vacancy. According to the township, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a U.S. citizen
- At least 18-years-old,
- A resident of the township for at least one year prior to Jan. 1, 2019
- Registered to vote in the township for a minimum of one year prior to Jan. 1, 2019
- A resident of Ward III (Check the township voting map here).

Applications will be accepted until 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25. Interviews will be scheduled with applicants during the week of Jan. 28.
The appointment for Ward III supervisor will be made by a majority vote of the Board of Supervisors at its regular meeting on Feb. 4, or at a special meeting to be scheduled.
