State College School Board OKs Policy for Advertising at Event Venues
State College Area School Board this week approved a new policy that will allow for some advertisements and sponsorships at district event venues.
In an effort to support extracurricular and co-curricular opportunities for students, the policy "provides the process by which non-traditional funding sources can be identified permitting the district to increase opportunities for students," according to the text of the policy. "In all such activities, the Board will make a conscientious and consistent effort to reinforce their commitment to the district's educational mission."
All commercial partnerships, partnerships and advertising would require board approval and revenue generated from advertising would go to the general fund for student needs as defined by the district.
Locations where sponsorships and partnerships would be permitted include Memorial Field, Community Field, South Track, North Turf Field, the Natatorium, high school gymnasiums and school auditoriums. For other spaces, advertising and sponsorship displays would be limited to the duration of the event, with exceptions possible when an event or gift necessitates promotion beyond the restrictions.
“I feel we did our due diligence to thread a very careful set of needles to do what wewanted to do without restricting our administration,” board member Lori Bedell said.
Under the new policy, use of the district name, logo or nicknames in an advertisement or other commercial application will not be permitted without prior approval by the superintendent.
