BELLEFONTE — After serving up made-from-scratch food in Pleasant Gap at the Red Horse Tavern since taking over the location in 2012, partners Justin Leiter and Courtney Confer are ready to handle a second location, this time at 205 Park Place Bellefonte.
When Bonaffato’s decided to move back downtown, Leiter and Confer found the perfect spot for a new location with a nice kitchen, take-out window and plenty of parking. So after renovating the space to make it feel new, they are ready to open up Sammi’s sometime in the next couple of weeks, offering up made-in-house fast casual dining in Bellefonte, with from-scratch-made sandwiches and salads.
With the inside walls tapered down, the location has a fresh, open feel with nice lighting shining in from the windows. Leiter has not revealed the menu yet, but those who have enjoyed the Red Horse will be in for a treat, as he plans to carry over some of the menu to the new location with some new twists.
“It will be an extension of what we do at the Red Horse — the sandwiches and the salads we do out there. It will be made from scratch and made to order. Signature dishes with some craft and creativity into it,” said Leiter. “You know we smoke a brisket over there and do a sandwich out of it, so we are going to do that and just bring some of the favorites over here. We are going to expand on that style of menu.”
Confer has a long history in the Bellefonte dining scene as the long time co-owner and chef of the historic Gamble Mill from 1986 to 2007.
Leiter said he is excited to bring some new options to the Bellefonte dining scene. He said he wanted to give busy families on the go a good meal when they are too busy to cook for themselves. They plan to utilize the drive-through window at the location for people who are in a rush and they will be able to order online through the website.
While the location won’t be serving alcohol, BYOB will be allowed. Once the building passes code and the business get’s rolling, the hours will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Leiter said they hope to be ready to go in the next few weeks, and people can keep an eye on the Facebook page for an opening day and a menu announcement.
