STATE COLLEGE — The Ferguson Township Police Department said it has received a number of calls from residents reporting attempts by identity thieves to create an online account with the Social Security Administration.

Police said that most of the residents who have been called are receiving Social Security benefits and each has received a letter from the Social Security Administration advising of the creation of a new account and a change of address notice.

Ferguson Township Police said they advise residents to be vigilant in checking mail for such letters, and should you receive one, to immediately contact the Social Security Administration State College office at 901 University Drive, Suite 2. The phone number is (800) 772-1213. These reports will be investigated by the Office of the Inspector General.

Online fraud reports may also be completed at https://oig.ssa.gov/ and IC3.gov.
