Penn State Football: Tommy Stevens To Join Moorhead At Mississippi State
After announcing his intent to transfer following Penn State's annual spring scrimmage, former Nittany Lion quarterback Tommy Stevens will play his final season of collegiate football at Mississippi State, joining forces with head coach and former Penn State offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead.
Stevens' announcement comes after a series of official visits to schools like Mississippi State, Miami (OH) and Illinois. The grad transfer will be immediately eligible to play in Starkville and will compete for the starting job returning backup quarterback Keytaon Thompson.
While Stevens was weighing multiple options following his decision to transfer, heading for a reunion with Moorhead had always been the most obvious option. For Stevens it gives him the potential to showcase his talents on the SEC stage, Mississippi State will host both Alabama and LSU this season.
For Moorhead, it gives him a familiar option at quarterback after the graduation of Nick Fitzgerald following the 2018-19 season. It remains to be seen if Stevens is a shoe-in for the job or if he and Thompson will take part in a genuine quarterback battle this summer.
"We look forward to Tommy joining our team and completing his final year of eligibility as a Mississippi State Bulldog," Moorhead said in a press release. "Tommy is very talented and will be an excellent addition to our roster. He will have the opportunity to compete at quarterback this season. With nearly 100 days until kickoff, we are excited about our summer preparations as we continue to build a program that will make Mississippi State fans proud."
Stevens has not spoken publicly about his decision to transfer but did offer up a long statement on Twitter as part of Friday's announcement.
