Gilkes named Coach of the Year, 3 Little Lions earn all-state honors
After capturing the PIAA Class AAA championship last weekend, State College boys outdoor track and field picked up several all-state honors on May 31.
Artie Gilkes was named boys Coach of the Year by the Pennsylvania Track and Field Coaches Association. Penn State-bound seniors Lance Hamilton and Luke Knipe were both named first-team all-state, while sophomore Conrad Moore received honorable mention.
For Gilkes, it's the second state coach of the year award this year. He earned the same honor from PTFCA after leading the Little Lions to the Pennsylvania indoor championship in February.
Hamilton was named first-team for the triple jump after winning his first PIAA title with a mark of 49-06. He also received honorable mention in the long jump, having won silver in the event last weekend. Hamilton was second-team all-state in the triple jump for the indoor season.
Knipe picked up first-team after his state championship in the pole vault, clearing 16-0 in the final. In March, he was tabbed third-team all-state in the pole vault for the indoor season.
Moore earned honorable mention in the high jump. The sophomore claimed bronze at the PIAA meet with a mark of 6-07.
