BELLEFONTE — In June—the entire month of June—Victorian House Antiques in historic Downtown Bellefonte is celebrating 25 years in business. Owner Mitch Bradley opened the first store in 1994 in Chester, N.J. In 2005 Bradley and his wife, Lyne, moved the business back to hometown Bellefonte.
“The business continues to grow and evolve. I have always dedicated myself to buying and selling nicer quality antiques and collectibles,” said Bradley. “I carry furniture in all woods and styles, estate jewelry, original artwork, pottery, lamps and stained glass. Fine gold and silver estate jewelry have become nice attractions over the last few years.”
Fine gifts and unusual pieces have been a mainstay for the shop. With the recent move of Victorian House Antiques to the largest location it’s ever had at 121 S. Allegheny Street, the selections have become even more diverse.
Bradley admits that although retail has its challenges, he embraces the role and enjoys the personal interaction it requires.
Bradley explained, “My mom, Dona, is a big part of the shop. Mom tends the store pretty much weekly. She seems to know everyone who comes in and always offers friendly conversation. She’s a huge bonus.”
Bradley says that changing trends in the antique business can be tricky as well.
“While quality never goes out of fashion, styles do. I try to stay current with trends and different age groups with different decorating and collecting needs,” said Bradley. “I try to accommodate all tastes but skew my buying toward whatever is most popular at any given time. Whether mid-century, arts and crafts, Victorian or primitive — I carry it all.”
The larger location has also allowed the business to accommodate a “shop within a shop” — Firefly Finishes offers a variety of country primitives and décor.
The entire month of June, Bradley will feature a 20 percent discount on all inventory purchased by cash or check. The month will culminate with a wine reception for customers on June 29. “It’s a way to say thank you to the community for its long-standing patronage,” said Bradley. “I couldn’t have done it without them or the unwavering support of my family.”
The Victorian House Antique shop is a bright, beautifully organized space that makes shopping there a pleasant experience. When in Bellefonte, congratulate Bradley on 25 years, the last 14 of which have been spent being part of the business community of Downtown Bellefonte.
