A detour will be in effect starting next week for a bridge removal and pipe installation on Route 550/Buffalo Run Road in Benner Township, according to PennDOT.

Work is scheduled to begin Monday for the project near the Route 550 intersection with Bloom Lane. The existing bridge, which spans Big Run, will be replaced with a large pipe, removing it from the list of Centre County bridges in poor conditions, according to PennDOT.

The official detour will use Purdue Mountain/North Fillmore Road and Armagast Road, though motorists familiar with the area may choose alternate routes.

Bloom Lane residents will be able to access their homes during the work, which is scheduled to be completed on July 3. PennDOT will re-open the road and lift the detour earlier if work progress allows. All work for the project will be done by PennDOT Centre County Maintenance.

The existing, 17-foot long bridge dates to 1924 and carries an average of 2,700 vehicles per day.
