Penn State Basketball: Reaves Shines As Summer League Ends, Carr Does Better With More Minutes
For Josh Reaves and Tony Carr, their Summer League session in Las Vegas came to a close on Wednesday afternoon with both former Nittany Lions hoping to land a roster spot within an NBA team's system.
In the case of Reaves, the Big Ten Defensive Player of The Year has lived up to his impressive senior season, scoring 10-or-more points in three-straight showings with a double-double against the Kings earlier in the week.
“I’m just going to take in everything and make the most of it,” Reaves told Mavs Moneyball. “I feel like I’m playing well, doing everything the coaches ask me to do within the system. Hopefully it leads to something. That’s pretty much all I’m doing so far, just playing hard each and every game and just trying to conduct myself as a professional.”
While it was previously reported that Reaves had locked up a two-way deal with the Mavericks, according to Brad Townsend of the Dallas Morning News, that isn't entirely true, at least not yet.
"Clarification from source on Reaves/Mavs," Townsend Tweeted in late June. "He will be classified as an Exhibit 10 player. Exhibit 10 deals are one-year for the minimum salary, but can only be converted to a two-way deal before the regular season begins. If that happens, then Macon or Kostas would be waived."
NBA teams can carry two players on two-way deals. Two-way contracts require a player spend the majority of their season in the G League with a minimum number of games at the NBA level allowed but no guarantee that a player will be called up.
As for Carr, the 2018 Pelicans' draft choice closed out summer league play with effective numbers, albeit without the flash of his former teammate. Carr averaged nearly nine points a game, topping out with 13 against the Bulls earlier in the week.
For both players it won't be long before they know their immediate futures.
