State High girls win Mid Penn championship

NEWVILLE — The Lady Little Lions took home the win at the Mid Penn championship held in Newville on Oct.

12. The team scored 68 points, ahead of second-place Chambersburg, which scored 85 team points.

This is State High’s fifth consecutive conference championship, which no other girls’ cross country team has accomplished since the conference merged A, AA and AAA classifications.

Marless Kwasnica led the team with a fourth place finish as she completed the race in 19:09. Lizzie Gilpatrick took seventh place in 19:21, followed by ninth-place finisher Jordan Reed (19:34). Other top SC finishers included Elly Haushalter (13th, place19:44) and Mihret Strauss (35th place, 20:37).

On Oct. 7, the girls competed in dual meet with Penns Valley and Altoona. The Lady Little Lions defeated the Lady Rams, 25-36, and took victory over the Lady Mountain Lions, 24-37.

SC’s Clarre Poter finished fourth with a time of 21:21 and was closely followed by teammate Eloise Dayrat in sixth with a time of 21:48. Other top SC runners included Jane Biddle (7th place, 21:53), Grace Morningstar (8th, 22:00), Vivian Scott (9th, 22:06) and Amy Dean (10th, 22:18).

The girls finished their dual meet season with a 6-3 record.


The Mounties took on St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy, Moshannon Valley and Grier in a quad meet on Oct. 8.

The boys’ squad won against Moshannon Valley, 17-46, but took a loss against St. Joe’s by a score of 43-15. Scott Frantz led the boys with an 11th place finish and crossed the line in 21:14. Frantz was followed by Mathew Thomas, who earned the 12th place spot in 23:30. Shane Parish completed the race in 23:32 for 15th place.

The girls’ team lost to St. Joe’s, 37-18, but pulled out wins against Mo Valley, 15-50, and against Grier, 24-25. Manna Porter led the girls with a sixth-place finish in 23:10, and was followed by eighth-place finisher Samantha Bainey (23:42). Other top Lady Mountie runners included Megan Kosut (9th, 26:09), Audrey Smith (14th, 27:13) and Natalie Shaw (15th, 27:37).


The Rams, who were also at the meet in Altoona on Oct.7, won against the Altoona Mountain Lions by a score of 29-30 and took their first loss of the season against State College, 33-26.

Brandan Colwell led the team while setting a new course record of 15:56. Daniel Kelly took 2nd place and ran time of 16:33 with Daniel Kelly finishing in 7th place, running a personal best of 17:53.
