WOODLAND — Coronavirus has canceled many summer customs, and outdoor concerts have been no exception.
Country music fans, though, can get their fix this weekend at the Super 322 Drive-In Theatre in Woodland, where Garth Brooks will perform on the big screen for a one-of-a-kind show.
“We’re extremely excited about this,” said Bill Frankhouser, who owns and operates the theatre with his wife Barb. “It’s never been done at a drive-in theatre, and we think there might be other venues down the road. A lot of the performers, from what we’re hearing, are not doing live shows because of the virus.”
The theatre, which has been lovingly restored and preserved over the years, is a unique piece of Americana. Only about 325 drive-ins remain in the U.S. Lately, the Super 322 has been showing retro films, because, as Barb Frankhouser explained, “Studios have pulled a lot of new releases we were expecting.”
Garth Brooks, Bill said, is reportedly a fan of drive-in theatres, and this concert performance is strictly for such venues.
“It’s a new concert, since they can’t have audiences with the virus, so this is a way to get an audience,” Bill said.
“To see (Garth Brooks) on a big screen, that’s pretty good,” said Barb. “If you go to a big concert, nine out of ten chances, you’re going to be stuck in the nosebleed section,” said Bill. “You’re going to be watching the screen anyway,” Barb added.
“And (at the drive-in), you can sit pretty much up front,” Bill said.
The theatre’s snack bar will be open, but the Frankhousers noted that the promoters are very serious about forbidding alcohol and outside food and beverage. The Super 322, though it has room for 650 cars, told the promoters their capacity is 400, to observe social-distancing recommendations. The show is Saturday, June 27, at 9:15 p.m.
Tickets are available at ticketmaster.com, and more information is available on the theatre’s website (www.super322drivein.com) and Facebook page.
