Penn State Basketball: NCAA Announces Nov. 25 Start Date
The NCAA announced earlier this week that the men's and women's college basketball seasons will get underway on Nov. 25, following recommendations from various oversight committees.
"The new season start date near the Thanksgiving holiday provides the optimal opportunity to successfully launch the basketball season," NCAA Senior Vice President of Basketball Dan Gavitt said. "It is a grand compromise of sorts and a unified approach that focuses on the health and safety of student-athletes competing towards the 2021 Division I basketball championships."
Neither Penn State basketball team had released a schedule for the upcoming season although a handful of opponents had been made public for both. It's unknown at this time if out of conference competitions will take place in the Big Ten, the conference previously resorting to league-only play for all fall sports.
That aside, the NCAA did offering scheduling guidelines as follows.
For men's programs, the schedule may include:
- 24 regular-season games and up to three games in one multi-team event.
- 25 regular-season games and up to two games in one multi-team event.
- 25 regular-season games without playing in a multi-team event.
For women's programs, the schedule may include:
- 23 regular-season games and up to four additional games in one multi-team event.
- 25 regular-season games without participating in a multi-team event.
Teams may begin preseason practice on Wednesday, Oct. 14 with a transition period taking place from Sept. 21 to Oct. 13. Exhibitions and scrimmages before Nov. 25 will not be allowed. Both Penn State programs had been practicing as per allowed NCAA rules related to summer team activities.
Penn State men's basketball will look to build off what would have been an NCAA Tournament berth prior to COVID-19 forcing the cancelation of the postseason while the Lady Lions will look to perform better in Carolyn Kieger's second year at the helm of that program.
