The State College area's newest Sheetz convenience store is tentatively expected to open by October or November along South Atherton Street, College Township Manager Adam Brumbaugh said last week.
Earth-moving construction is well under way at the 9.5-acre site, just east of the Home Delivery Pizza eatery at South Atherton Street and West Branch Road.
As part of the project, a state-approved rerouting of West Branch Road will relocate the roadway behind Home Delivery and reconnect it with Atherton Street across from the mid-block entrance to Hills Plaza.
That will create a more conventional, four-way intersection with a new traffic light – and situate West Branch Road between Home Delivery and the new Sheetz, Brumbaugh said.
The new development is positioned on land once occupied by the former South Ridge Motor Inn and will be dubbed South Ridge Plaza, according to plans filed in College Township. The NPK South Ridge Partnership, including local business leaders Bob Poole, Heidi Nicholas and Brad Karch, has pulled the effort together, township documents show.
Nicholas and Poole could not be reached immediately on Friday. But plans indicate that the Sheetz, gas pumps and a parking area will front South Atherton Street. Also on the property – eventually – will be a five-bay car wash, an 8,000-square-foot restaurant, and a two-story office building to house some financial services, the plans show.
Brumbaugh said he doesn't know specifically what businesses may occupy those planned facilities.
