Penn State Hockey: Nittany Lions Grab Two Points In Shootout Win Over No.11 Ohio State

Penn State hockey continued its tradition of occasionally making things harder than they need to be, beating No.11 Ohio State in a shootout on Friday night despite leading the game 3-1 in the third period and tying the contest with .7 seconds to play.

But before all the drama it was Kris Myllari who opened the scoring for Penn State in the early going just 6:20 into the evening in Columbus. Ohio State would tie the game with just over a minute to play in the opening period, sending the game to the first intermission tied at 1-1.

Penn State retook the lead in the second period as Alex Limoges made the most of a turnover on the forecheck to cash in the second tally of the night 4:58 into the frame. Defensman Kevin Kerr added one of his own to put Penn State up 3-1 with 14:04 gone by the the middle frame.

The third period was everything the first two periods weren't, and Ohio State poured on the offense scoring three goals in the first 8:53 of the period retaking the lead. The one-goal margin didn't last long as Trevor Hamilton tied the game just minutes later at 4-4.

With just less than five minutes to play Ohio State would take the lead, seemingly winning the game in the final minutes.

But then with just seconds to go the puck found its way from behind the Ohio State net and to the stick of Andrew Strutz, who heaved a shot on goal, and into the back of it with .7 to play.

It would prove to be the difference between no points and two as Penn State went on to win the shootout and the game 6-5 with Chris Funkey making over 40 saves in his starting appearance.

Penn State and Ohio State take the ice again on Saturday.
