PV boys open new gym with win; Bellefonte victorious

All county teams have logged their first games of the 2018-19 boys’ basketball season. Bellefonte ended an eight-year losing streak against Central Mountain. Penns Valley opened up its new gym with a dominating win. And St. Joe’s got its first win ever over Bishop Carroll.

Here’s a recap of Week 1:


The Mounties opened up with a 55-54 loss on the road to Southern Huntington on Dec. 8. Sophomore Ryan Whitehead was the Mounties’ leader in scoring with 20 points. Senior Carson Jones added 16 points in the loss.

P-O is scheduled to travel to Bellefonte on Friday, Dec. 14, for the team’s Mountain League Conference opener.


Bishop Guilfoyle’s three-point shooting was too much for the Wolves, as St. Joe’s dropped its home opener 77-58 on Dec. 7.

Senior guard R.J. Marsh was the Wolves’ top scorer, finishing with 13 points. Sophomore teammate Brendan Scanlon finished behind Marsh with 11 points.

The Wolves grabbed a road victory,  67-60, at St. John Neumann on Dec. 8. Marsh had a team-high 29 points while Scanlon was the next top scorer with 12 points.

Saint Joe’s got its first-ever win against Bishop Carroll on Dec. 10. The Wolves, who ended up winning the 75-65 battle in overtime, were led by senior Jack Mangene in scoring  with 26 points. Sophomore Cam Khoza also added 16 points.

Next up for the Wolves is a home game against Harrisburg Academy on Dec. 15.


For the first time since 2010, Bellefonte defeated Central Mountain. Senior Nate Tice led the Raiders to a 64-49 win over the Wildcats on Dec. 7 at home. He scored 20 points. Junior Ben McCartney added 15 points for the Raiders in the win.

The Raiders will host Philipsburg-Osceola on Dec. 14 for the team’s next game.


The Eagles held West Branch to just five points in the fourth quarter in a 63-56 home win over the Warriors on Dec. 7. In scoring, junior Jaden Jones led the way for the Eagles with 23 points. Nick Maynard and Luke Wilson both added 12 in the win.

Up next for Bald Eagle is a home game versus Central on Dec. 14.


The Rams won their first game in the school’s new gymnasium on Dec. 7. Penns Valley rolled through Westport by a score of 54-17.

Junior Logan Snyder was the team’s leading scorer, finishing with 19 points on the night. Senior Cam Shaffer put up 10 points in the win.
Penns Valley will travel to Tyrone on Dec. 14 for its next game.


The Little Lions dropped back-to-back games during the Skip Coleman Tip off Tournament at home.

On Dec. 7 State College fell 67-42 to Bishop Shanahan.

On Dec. 8, despite leading 31-23 at halftime, the Little Lions were outscored in overtime 11-8 and lost 64-61 at the hands of Christopher Dock Mennonite High School.

Up next for the Little Lions is  a trip to Chambersburg High School on Friday, Dec.14.
