Taste of the Month: HiWay Pizza Pub expands to the west end of town with its signature pies

The Zangrilli family made their mark in State College with the opening of HiWay Pizza Pub on Hiester Street in 1963, which later moved to its current location at 1688 North Atherton Street. In November 2017, Dante’s Restaurants Inc. expanded their business with the opening of a second Hi-Way Pizza Pub location on the west end of town at 1301 West College Avenue.

“We enjoyed so many years of great business, memories, and people at our former Westerly Parkway location, it feels really good to be back in the neighborhood,” says Jennifer Zangrilli, Dante’s director.

The neighborhood pizza shop and pub uses Andy Zangrilli’s original spice blend in its signature sauces, which is a closely guarded family secret. HiWay Pizza Pub has made hand-tossed pizza pies and scratch-made food its specialty. With five different types of pizza dough – the classic, round Neapolitan style; the thicker, square Sicilian style; a Chicago Pan Pizza; the Red Stuffed Pizza, and the one-of-a-kind Flaky Crust – there is something different for everyone. One bite into the buttery croissant-like dough of the Flaky Crust pizza pie and you are hooked, especially the Vodka Flaky, which has a signature vodka sauce, fresh mozzarella, and prosciutto.

“We have expanded our menu to include several 10-inch artisan-style pizzas that are cooked in our brick oven very quickly and at a high temperature, so it’s a bit crisper and they have a thinner crust,” explains JP Mills, Dante’s director.

“Our pizza dough and homemade desserts are made fresh every day at our commissary,” says Zangrilli. “We use only the finest and freshest local and imported ingredients at all our restaurants.”

In addition to pizzas, the menu includes salads, burgers, wedges, and new shareable items including creamy garlic bruschetta and 10 newly developed wing sauces to accompany the jumbo bone-in or boneless wing options. Other new menu items include Italian pasta entrees such as Chicken Piccata, Chicken Marsala, Beef Braciole, and Penne Julia.

Open daily from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. with kitchen service from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., HiWay Pizza Pub “West” has plenty of parking and features 32 TV screens with every sports package available including NFL Sunday Ticket, NBA, NHL, MLB, and NCAA.

The spacious atmosphere welcomes families and kids with seating options including traditional booths, tables, and high-tops as well as a full bar. The pub is anchored by a 30-selection draft beer system and drink menu boasting a mixture of classic and modern cocktails including a tasteful wine list.

There are different daily drink features until midnight, and Happy Hours are Monday through Thursday 4-7 p.m., Friday 4-6 p.m., with specials such as $2 off wine, spirits, and cocktails, as well as 3-2-1 draft beer specials. 

The convenient on-site retail wine and beer take-out bottle shop complements diners’ carry-out food orders. Delivery is available through UberEATS and Grubhub.
