JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- Closing arguments were presented Thursday morning in the federal trial of a Cambria County woman charged with setting a million-dollar fire that sent two dozen firefighters to the hospital. The jury began its deliberations shortly after both sides wrapped up the case.Federal prosecutors said the case is simple. Terri Kerr wanted Miller Pools to burn and tried to get several people to do it for her, they said. When that failed, prosecutors said Kerr did it herself and admitted it to her boyfriend.Prosecutors said that alone was proof beyond a reasonable doubt. The defense, however, said all the evidence against Kerr was circumstantial. A main point of the defense's case was that the fire was ruled undetermined, not arson. The defense also said the government used the star witness, Kerr's former boyfriend, as a way to "boot strap the case with a sleazeball."The defense said that Kerr would not burn down the business because she has three children who depend on her.During the deliberations the jury asked the judge guestions regarding the definition of reasonable doubt, as well as what to do if they become deadlocked.Shortly after the question about becoming deadlocked was raised, the jury was released for the evening.Deliberations will begin again Friday morning.
