JACKSON TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- It has been decades of dry wells and bad water in a Cambria County community, but that dry spell could be over soon.

"There are people who have had to dig second wells, and people who watch when they flush the toilets, or do their laundry. It's very inconvenient, but public water could really change that," said Jackson Township Manager Dave Hirko.

People who live along three miles of Swigle Mountain Road in Jackson Township are all in the same boat. And the problems have been going on for more than 30 years.

"The Taylors just down the street are badly in need of the water. They go down to the spring everyday just to collect water for the shower and so forth," said Vince Tomak.

Jackson Township is at the intersection of three major roads. And it's quickly becoming a bedroom community because it's a straight shot for commuters to Pittsburgh, Altoona and Johnstown. However, township officials said the water problems have been a big setback.

Hirko said they now think they can solve the problem with getting public water to the homes.

"We've got the wheels turning with engineers coming in and we're doing water studies. People are really excited to have public water out here," said Hirko.

Hirko said they've had little opposition, but it will still take two or three years to extend the public lines.

According to Hirko, the water project will be costly but they're looking at all funding options.

Township officials are hoping extending the water lines will even spur more development in the area.
