Local Defense Company In Talks To Be Sold

Friday, May 9, 2008 – updated: 10:43 pm EDT May 9, 2008

A big name defense contractor in the Johnstown may soon be sold. According to the Wall Street Journal and the company's own Web site, the answer is yes.

DRS Technologies is based in New Jersey but has a local branch in Richland Township near the airport.

The company is well-known for it's work developing military equipment, and employs about 10,000 people all together.

In fact, the company just participated in a local career fair and is looking to fill 125 positions.

According to the Wall Street Journal, DRS is in talks with an Italian company that builds everything from aircraft to missiles to underwater defense systems.

A statement on the DRS Web site states that it's in "discussions contemplating a potential strategic transaction involving the company. There is no assurance that any agreement will be reached and the company will have no further comment at this time."

Channel 6 News contacted the Richland Township office, but officials said they are not allowed to comment about what this may mean for local employees. The corporate office in New Jersey was also contacted, but so far there's been no response.
