Man Accused Of Parents' Double Murder

Thursday, March 27, 2008 – updated: 7:53 pm EDT March 27, 2008

John and Mary Lou Reed were found dead in their Brookville home Wednesday night, and their son is now accused in their deaths.

Police said 45 year-old Richard Reed killed his parents a few days ago. After the killings, he spent a night in the house and two more nights at a hotel in Clarion, Pa., before driving to the Canadian border at Niagara Falls, police said.

Border officials became suspicious of Richard Reed after they discovered the car he was driving was leased to his mother. Reed had claimed he owned the car, they said.

When border officials searched the car, they said they found a bag with wedding bands, as well as an envelope with nearly $2,000. Officials notified police in Jefferson County, who then went to check on the 74 year-old couple, who they found dead.

Customs officials questioned Richard Reed, and they said he admitted to being an alcoholic who had been in rehab several times. Officials said Reed admitting to shooting and killing his parents five days ago, after a discussion over his going back to rehab.

Reed was transported back to Jefferson County, from Buffalo, N.Y., Thursday afternoon.

He is currently in the Jefferson County Jail and faces charges of criminal homicide and aggravated assault.

The joint investigation included Brookville police, state police and the Jefferson County district attorney.

Brookville residents said John and Mary Lou Reed were involved in the community.

They also spoke of Mary Lou Reed's love of gardening.

"We'd always say hello or wave to them," said Charles Maxwell. "They were always mowing their grass or planting flowers."
