Obituary of Delores 'Dee' Treaster

Delores Jean “Dee” Treaster died at home August 7, 2019 surrounded by her family after a nearly four year battle with breast cancer. Dee was born in Philipsburg PA on July 17, 1948 to Frank and Anna Kowalcyk of Madera, PA.

On October 20, 1973, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in State College, PA, she Married Allen L. Treaster, who survives at home. She is also survived by her son Scott Treaster and his wife XueChao Chi of Beaver, PA. Also surviving are her sisters Helen Orges and Cecilia Wroblesky of Parma, OH, her brother Frank Kowalcyk, Jr. of Sandy Ridge, PA and the families of her siblings. The recent marriage of Scott and Chao was high point of her battle with cancer.

She attended Moshannon Valley High School where she emphasized business education. It was rumored, however, that she spent most of her time in the art room. After graduating from MO Valley in 1966 she joined Penn State’s Applied Research Laboratory’s secretarial staff where she rose to the position of Administrative Assistant to the Director of Human Resources. She left ARL in 1978, following the birth of Scott, to provide a thesis editing and typing service for Penn State graduate students.

In 1980 she joined the Human Resources Department of HRB Singer on a part-time basis. Here she provided management support to the Succession Planning function of HRB. During these business-related years, she took courses from Penn State to support her professional work. With the elimination of part-time employment at HRB in 1989 came the job of a life time.

Dee was asked by Rev Philip Bender of the newly formed Good Shepherd Catholic Church to assist the parish secretary on a part-time basis. When the secretary moved out-of-state, Dee became the full-time secretary and later the office manager. In 2007 she was appointed parish manager and was the first female parish manager in the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese. As well as managing all the activities of the church, she was the Head of the Art and Environment Committee. Here her artistic abilities were realized as the Committee created large-scale works of art that interpreted the themes of the major liturgical seasons of the Church. In 2011 she was tasked by Rev Charles Amershek to lead the development of the Bender Center: a multiuse physical addition to the main Church. The results can be seen at 867 Grays Woods Blvd., Port Matilda, PA.

Dee’s love of art was also expressed with her husband in the design and construction of their contemporary-rustic forever-home in suburban Julian, PA. Dee also loved dogs, particularly Thor, the Old English Sheep dog, Max, the Cockapoo and currently Fr. Charlie’s Dalmatian, Ziva.

Those who knew and worked with her will remember her for her smile.

The family thanks the UPMC Hospice team for their caring support in Dee’s final days. In lieu of flowers donations should be made to Good Shepherd Catholic Church.

A viewing will be held at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 867 Grays Woods Blvd. Port Matilda, PA on Friday Aug 9. 2019 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. A funeral liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday Aug 10 at 11:00 am with Fr. Charlie Amershek officiating. Interment will be at the discretion of the family.
