Obituary of Dorothy Viola Hoy Lowery Semple, 88


Dorothy Viola Hoy Lowery Semple, 88, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2018 at Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College, PA. She was born January 2nd 1930 at home in Marion Township, in Jacksonville, PA.

The daughter of Mervin Earl Hoy, and Viola Elizabeth Korman, on August 30, 1948 she married Gerald W. Lowery who preceded her in death and on October 20, 1979 she married Emmett Arbie Semple who preceded her in death. Her brother Ray Fred Hoy and great, great grandson, Braven, also preceded her in death.

She was a graduate of Howard High School, Howard, PA. Her first job after high school was at the sewing factory (Woolrich) in Howard. She worked numerous years in the camera department of Widmann ‘s Drug Store, G.C. Murphy, Western Auto and Lou Woods Cloverfarm in Bellefonte, PA as well as Lowery’s Sunoco in Unionville, PA. She retired from the accounting department of Best Way Truck Stop in 1994 after 23 years of service.

She is survived by five siblings: Grace Isabel, Earl Mervin, Anna Katherine, Glenn Homer, Mary Elizabeth, and numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

She is survived by four children and step-daughter: Jerrie Anna Lowery Grieb (James), Donna Marie Lowery Confer (Richard), Allen Luther Lowery (Kathy,) Susan Viola Lowery Confer Terrell (William) and Jody Semple Everhart, (Glen.) Eleven grandchildren: Jim Grieb (Beth), Julie Grieb Johnson (Jeremy), Brian Confer (Michelle), Bruce Confer (Sunelby), Allen Lowery (Heather), Laura Lowery Emberton( Philip), Ryan Confer, Brandon Confer (Jamie,) Dyann Confer, Dallas Terrell (Patricia) and Christy Terrell.

Fourteen great grandchildren: Kiera Grieb Park (Evan), Jim Grieb (Megan), Renny Grieb, Chase Johnson, Malaya Johnson, Alexis Morrison Confer, Caden Confer, Camden Confer, Britny Lowery, Chelcea Lowery, Daniel Emberton, Dalton Emberton, Dakota Mateer, and Zane Terrell.

Two great, great grandchildren: Riley and Tyler, Atoniee and Kohyn.

She was baptized at the Jacksonville United Church of Christ in Jacksonville, PA and active in the church her entire life participating in teaching Sunday school, outreach, fundraising, choir, and serving as secretary, Deacon and Elder (both several times) on the consistory.

She enjoyed cooking and baking (trying new recipes), gardening (definitely had a green thumb) knitting, crocheting, sewing, arts and crafts, genealogy, scrapbooking and spending time with her family. Her favorite flower was a red rose and her favorite song was Red River Valley.

She was a former member and secretary of Union Grange, Unionville,and served as treasurer of the former Unionville Senior Citizens.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Kader-Neff Funeral Home, 135 W. Main St., Howard with Pastor Cindy Killinger officiating

Friends will be received on Wednesday, April 18th from 6-8 p.m. at the Funeral Home.Interment will be at Jacksonville Cemetery.
