Obituary of Edward John Gannon, 58


Edward John Gannon, of Bellefonte, PA passed away suddenly on Wednesday, November 14, 2018. He was 58 years old. Ed is survived by his beloved wife Susan (Charnick) and children Alyssa Nastase and John Joseph (JJ) Nastase, whom he loved as his own.

Ed was born in Roslyn, Pennsylvania on August 14, 1960 as the eldest son of the six children of Dorothy Elder Gannon and Edward Aloysius Gannon, Jr. He attended St. John of the Cross School and then graduated from Abington High School in 1978. Ed earned his Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America in 1978.

Ed was a lifelong Penn Stater. He received his BS in Civil Engineering from Pennsylvania State University in 1982 followed by his Master’s degree in 1991 and PhD in 1998 in Civil & Structural Engineering. Ed served as an Instructor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University for 10 + years as well as a Manager and BIM Champion for Office of Physical Plant of the University for 12 years. Over the course of his engineering career, Ed held leadership positions at Urban Engineers and Sear-Brown Group, and was currently employed as a Director at McCrossin Engineering in Bellefonte, PA.

Ed was heavily involved in the Special Olympics Pennsylvania for the past 20 years, serving as the Summer Games Event Director for the past 3 years, and multiple committee positions over 2 decades. He thoroughly enjoyed his volunteer work with the Special Olympics and recruited family and friends to get involved as well. He and son JJ happily labored over the construction of many Bocce courts, in addition to many other hands-on jobs, while also overseeing the events. His passion and enthusiasm was contagious to those around him. His love for helping others was genuine and he wanted every kid to have opportunities to succeed, feel special and be part of team.

Ed also had a passion for coaching youth lacrosse. During his 8 years of coaching, Ed spent 3 seasons as the Head Boys Lacrosse Coach for the Bellefonte High School Red Raiders followed by 5 years as Head Coach of the Bellefonte Middle School Boys Lacrosse Team while concurrently serving as both Assistant and Head Coach of Holo-Lax Lacrosse Club. Ed’s easy coaching style influenced young athlete’s love of the game. His fatherly guidance coached them for life.

Ed married the love of his life Susan, on August 14, 2010, his 50th birthday, and with it gained two wonderful children in Alyssa & JJ. He was a gift that completed their family and a blessing to all who were lucky enough to have known him.

He is preceded in death by his father, Edward Aloysius Gannon, Jr.

Ed is survived by his wife Susan and children Alyssa and JJ as well as his mother Dorothy Elder Gannon and his siblings Patricia O’Hagan (Steve), Michael Gannon (Stephanie), Christine Schwar (Rob), Kate McManus (Mick) and Mary Mancini. He is also survived by his parents-in-law Joe and Barbara Charnick and sisters-in-law Sarah Yeager (Denny), Mary Jo Miller (Mike) and Megan Friday (Luke). Ed also leaves behind 20 adoring nephews and nieces.

Ed is gone but will not be forgotten by those that love him. He will be remembered for his imposing stature, warm heart and endearing and silly sense of humor, as well as his affable nature and willingness to lend a hand.

There will be a public viewing held on Sunday, November 18, 2018 from 3-6 pm at Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc. at 206 N. Spring Street, Bellefonte. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, November 19, 2018 at 10 am at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church at 134 E. Bishop Street, Bellefonte, with Father George Jakopac officiating. Burial will immediately follow in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery.

A Celebration of Ed’s Life will be held in the Philadelphia area on Friday, November 23, 2018 at 12 noon at the William Penn Inn, 1017 Dekalb Pike, Gwynedd, PA 19436.

In lieu of flowers, Ed’s family is requesting donations be made to a college fund established for Alyssa and JJ Nastase. Donations can be made payable to the Edward Gannon Memorial Fund and sent to M&T Bank, 1330 South Atherton Street, State College, PA 16801.
