Obituary of Emil Kazez

Emil Kazez passed away on July 20, 2018. He was born in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1926, the son of Israel and Rahel. He came to the U.S. in 1951 aboard the SS John Philip Sousa, and headed to Madison, Wisconsin, where he studied physics. Emil earned a Ph.D. at the University of Chicago in 1957, and then began a more than 50-year career as a physics professor at Penn State. His areas of research included high energy particle physics.

One of the memories he particularly cherished was of spending the summer of 1973 working with Steven Hawking at Cambridge University. Emil's 63-year marriage to his wife, Ruth, started with a honeymoon bicycle trip around Lake Michigan. Soon there were three children, Will, Jean, and Danny, and later, six grandchildren. Emil loved reminiscing about long bicycle trips he took with Ruth in Portugal, Greece, Scotland, and Ireland, as well as hiking trips in New Zealand and Switzerland. His children loved his company, delighting in his unfailing charm, warmth, and wit. He will be greatly missed.

All are invited to celebrate Emil’s life at a memorial Turkish picnic on July 29th at 11:30 am at Spring Creek Park, 901 Houserville Road, State College. Rain or Shine. An online guestbook may be signed and condolences sent to the family at
