Obituary of Karen Suzanne (Weaver) Mitchell, 74

We said goodbye to our best friend on Friday, May 25th. Karen Suzanne (Weaver) Mitchell was with her husband and daughters.

Two things always stood out upon meeting Karen – her incredible intellect and her graceful beauty. Her greatest passions were books, history, travel, literature and her family.

Born in Lancaster, PA, she moved to State College, PA as a teen when her father began teaching and writing at Penn State University.

In high school she was an avid reader, an athlete, a brain, and a cheerleader. Students voted her “Best All-Around” in the graduating class of State College High School in 1961.

She went to Penn State and studied Art History. There she met the love of her life, William (Bill) Mitchell on a blind date that culminated with a midnight game of Frisbee on a quiet street under gently falling snow. Bill was smitten, as were many people that met her, and after dating a few years they were married on June 16, 1966.

Bill joined the navy, and during his WESPAC deployment Karen got her master’s degree in Library Science at the University of Southern California.

Eventually they settled outside Washington DC, and Karen worked at the Library of Congress. They bought their first home in Columbia, MD in the early 70s, embracing the new concepts in community planning.

There, they welcomed two daughters, Sarah and Erin. Karen loved being a mother, going to tot lots with her girls, and chatting with new mothers from everywhere.

In 1977, the family began living overseas through assignments with Bill’s work at the United States Information Agency (USIA). During the next 12 years they lived in Abidjan, Ivory Coast; Montevideo, Uruguay; Bonn, Germany; and Mexico City, Mexico. Bill travelled a lot in his job, so Karen assumed many family responsibilities.

While abroad Karen continued her career, managing school and local libraries in Abidjan and Bonn. Upon returning to the United States, Karen worked at the US Department of State and USIA Libraries.

Her love of history, art and culture ultimately led her to travel to 75 countries. Ever the travellers, Karen and Bill left Washington DC to explore more domestic places in 1993. Their first stop was La Grange, GA, where Karen was a reference librarian at local community and college libraries; they then moved to Keowee Key, SC where she worked with the reference staff at Clemson University Library; followed by 12 years in Glendale, AZ, exploring the West; and now at their current home in Ocean View, DE.

She found joy in everything. She loved cooking new dishes, entertaining, house decorating, spending time with her grandchildren, hiking, camping, loving the family dogs, and reading her countless books.

Karen’s legacy is that of a truly selfless, brilliant, beautiful, funny, charming, classy lady.
