Obituary of Kathryn 'Kitty' Long


Kathryn “Kitty” (Pierce) Long passed away February 22, 2018, peacefully in her sleep. Kitty was born on July 19, 1942 to the late Clare William (CW) and Helen M. Pierce. She is also predeceased by her loving sister, Margaret “Susan” Cole, in October 2016. She is survived by her brother, John Pierce.

Kitty is also survived by her devoted husband of 52 plus years, Nevin E. Long, and her three children. Her son, Kevin M. Long, daughter, Kerry M. (Long) Pedrett, and “adopted” daughter, Sherie (Foust) Bors-Koefoed. Kitty will also be missed by her multitude of grandchildren: Jesse, Fleming, Matthew, Chynna, Andrew, Nathaniel, Kyle, Brielle, Kryslynn and Aaron, as well as her beloved daughter-in-law, Jennifer (Harteis) Long and “adopted” son-in-law, Lars Bors-Koefoed.

Kitty retired in 2012 from Penn State University where she worked for the Institute for the Study of Adult Literacy for a multitude of years. She kept herself busy with regular workouts at Victory Sports and Fitness to maintain and manage her health. When her children were young she was very active in both the Girl scouts and the Cub scouts serving in various leadership positions. Kitty had a love for travel and kept a close circle of friends from high school who continued to meet on a regular basis. Kitty was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

Kitty will be sorely and deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. She has a great extended family and network of friends whom she held dear and in her heart, and she in theirs.

Friends will be received from 4-6 PM, Sunday, February 25, 2018 at Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Services, 1034 Benner Pike, State College. A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM, Monday, February 26, 2018 at Calvary Church – Harvest Fields, 150 Harvest Fields Drive, Boalsburg. Interment in Centre County Memorial Park will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In Lieu of flowers a donation to the Neuro Challenge Foundation for Parkinson’s at 722 Apex Road, Unit A Sarasota FL 34240 is requested.
