Obituary of Pamela Burden Milholland

Pamela Burden Milholland died peacefully on April 25, 2018, in State College where she was a resident for almost 30 years, most recently at Foxdale Village. She was spirited, strong, healthy, creative, and a true lover of life, and she will be deeply missed by her friends and family.

Pam was the youngest of three children born to Joseph Warren Burden and Marjorie Maude Burden of New York, NY, on December 9, 1926. She was close to her brother Joseph (killed in WWII) and older sister Winifred (predeceased, England, 2017). She attended the Rippowam School in New York, Chatham Hall School in Virginia and received her bachelor's degree from Sarah Lawrence College, NY. Pam was known for her intellect, quick wit, curiosity, and was an avid writer in correspondence and in stories she wrote about her childhood.

After college she went on to work in the fashion industry in NYC and for Owens Corning in early television commercials. She was a beauty who wore bright cheery colors, and prided herself in finding deals on her outfits at thrift stores. She met and married James Milholland Jr. in 1959 (predeceased 1998), and together they had two children: James Milholland III of Sarasota, Florida, and Peter Burden Millholland of Freeport, Maine. She was proud of her three grandchildren, Rusty, Christo and Olivia, and was an influential figure in their lives. Additional places of residence were Cleveland, OH, and Bedford, NY. She moved to State College, PA in 1989 upon her husband Jim’s retirement.

She will be remembered for her many creative pursuits, her laughter, and not being afraid to voice her opinion. She had a lovely soprano voice in the Choral Arts Society and the UU Choir, and with her artistic eye she surrounded herself with visual splendor. She attacked life vigorously, and voiced that death was an adventure she was going on with a sense of humor. She taught by example, and many of her qualities will live on in those she touched.

A small private family memorial service will be held in Maine in the coming months. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to, “Employee Appreciation Fund at Foxdale Village, 500 East Marylyn Ave., State College, PA 16803.”
