Obituary of Paul Mills


Paul "Flip" Mills, Born in Renovo, Paul was the oldest son of Paul L. Mills and Rebecca Belford Mills.

After graduating from Renovo High School, he joined the US Air Force in 1955. Upon discharge, he enrolled at Lock Haven University as an Education Major where he met his wife, Mildred "Midge" Dolan. They were married on June 16, 1962 in Anchorage, Alaska where Paul worked for the Schlumberger Oil Well Surveying Company until 1964.

After graduating from LHU in 1968, Paul was employed as an elementary teacher for the Keystone Central School District before being appointed Team Leader for Penn State University Cycle 12 Teacher Corps Project. While assigned to Penn State, Paul completed his Master's Degree and obtained certification as an Elementary Principal. In 1982 he returned to teaching at Mill Hall Elementary School until his retirement in 1995.

Paul created and directed the first Flaming Foliage Festival Follies in 1971. He was an active member of the Renovo Elks Lodge 344, served as Exalted Ruler in 1972, and became a lifetime member in 1986. He also enjoyed golf, supported the Howard Volunteer Fire Department, and was a member of the Howard VFW. Paul was involved in a variety of musical grops from bluegrass to swing bands. He, Bud Hallberg, and Bill Jones formed the group "Bud and the Dynamics" in 1968. In 1986, Paul helped form the Keystone Society of Swiing. In the late 90's Paul and several Howard area musicians formed The Back Porch String Band which is still active.

Paul was preceded in death by his best friend and wife of 45 years, Midge, on May 30, 2008. He is survived by three daughters: Lisa (Doug) Shetler of Bangor, Pa, Lynda (Fred) Morley of Tacoma, WA, and Pamela (Ken) Giannoni of Marietta, GA.; four siblings: Belford Mills of Knoxville, TN., Jan D. Mills, Sr. of Altoona, Pa., Rebecca (Cleon) Cannon of Niagara Falls, NY., and Jean (Tony) Bencic of Manning, SC., sister-in-law, Janet Bryant of Coconut Creek, Fl., seven grandchildren: Danielle, Aaron, Derrick, Tanner, Anthony, Leo, and Madelynn; and 2 great-grandchildren: Holly and Athan.

Private memorial service being held at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Howard Fire Company.
