Obituary of Sydney Aboul-Hosn, 65


Sydney S. Aboul-Hosn, 65, of Bellefonte, passed away suddenly at home on Friday, July 13, 2018. She was a devoted wife and mother, a passionate teacher, and a lover of bunnies and pandas. She rescued animals both real and stuffed, feeding woodland creatures of all kinds and playing claw games wherever she found them.

Born on May 31, 1953, in San Diego, California, and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, she was the daughter of the late Orlen and Caroline (Rader) Rice. She met her husband, Hussein Aboul-Hosn, while they were both studying in Poitiers, France. They were married Oct. 2, 1976, in Minneapolis, before returning to France for the next five years.

The family moved to Bellefonte in 1986. After receiving her Ph.D. from Penn State University in 1998, Sydney continued working in the Department of Comparative Literature as a professor and adviser. She also served as the president of the Penn State chapter of Phi Beta Kappa honor society.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Kamal Aboul-Hosn (and Randa Fayez) of New York City, New York, and a daughter, Hannah (and Greg) Prince of Fairfax, Virginia. Other surviving family members include a brother, Barry (and Julie) Rice of Minneapolis, and a sister, Katherine Rice, of Calais, Maine. She will also be missed by her two remaining bunnies, Millie and Phoebe.

Friends and family will be received on Saturday, July 21, 2018, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc., at 206 N. Spring St., Bellefonte. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
