Obituary of The Reverend John S. Hench


The Reverend John S. Hench went to his Eternal Rest, Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at his home in Centre Hall, with the “love of his life” and bride of 57 years Jennie at his side. He was loved to his last breath by his wife and family.

John was born June 21, 1937 in Kistler, PA, a son of the late Stanley F. and Evelyn Stuber Hench. He was preceded in death by his sister Lucille Frank, and a brother Elwood Hench. He was raised in Kistler PA and graduated from Blain Union High School in Blain.

He attended Elizabethtown College, majoring in Philosophy and Religion, graduating in 1960, with a B.A. Degree in Liberal Arts. Upon graduation he entered the Lancaster Theological Seminary of the United Church of Christ, in Lancaster. There he earned a Bachelor of Divinity Degree on June 4, 1963 and on May 10, 1974 he earned his Master of Divinity Degree.

Reverend Hench has served the following congregations of the United Church of Christ, Hublersburg-Zion U.C.C., Hublersburg, Locust Grove, U.C.C., York, and Trinity U.C.C. in Centre Hall; and had the privilege of returning to his first parish, Trinity U.C.C., in Hublersburg prior to his retirement. He retired from the Ministry December 2001.

Reverend Hench was a delegate to the Fifth General Synod Meeting of the United Church of Christ. In 1967 he attended the National Ecumenical Evangelism Conference held at Green Lake Baptist Assembly in Green Lake, Wisconsin.

At the Penn Central Conference he served on the Evangelism Committee, the Leadership Development Task Force, and the Presidential Guidelines and Screening Committee. He has also represented Penn Central Conference on the Division of Evangelism, Pennsylvania Council of Churches.

His work at the Association level included serving on the Evangelism Committee, Lay Life and Work and the Church and Ministry Committee of which he served as chairman for several years.

He served his community as a member of the Board of Directors of the Penns Valley Medical Center and the Penns Valley Area School Board.

Surviving are his beloved wife Jennie D. (Witt) Hench; and two sons, Kevin D. Hench and his wife Christine of New Britain, PA and Keith R, Hench and his wife Samantha, of Tiffin, Iowa; two brothers, Mark Hench and his wife Barb of Mechanicsburg, and Dean Hench and his wife Barb of Loysville. He (Pappy) leaves behind four adorable grandsons, Connor, Christopher, Joshua, and Kyle.

The Hench family would like to thank John’s family physician Dr. Paul Guillard and Hospice 365 for the outstanding love and care they provided. Also special thanks to Kathy with Home Instead; and Pastors Downer and Sauerwein; and the many others who contributed to John’s amazing life journey.

His family is grateful that John’s life was lived with integrity and honor before his god and his family.

A celebration of Reverend Hench’s life will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday June 10, 2018 at Trinity United Church of Christ, 104 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Centre Hall; with the Reverend David Downer and the Reverend Russell Sauerwein officiating. The family will receive friends in the church immediately following the Celebration of Life Service. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family
