Obituary of Walter L. Mayes, 79


Walter L. Mayes, 79, of Centre Hall, died Thursday, April 5, 2018 at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.

Born December 12, 1938 in Exeter Township, Berks County, he was a son of the late John Russell and Mary C. (Snyder) Mayes.

Walter served our Country in the United States Marine Corps from 1956 – 1962 then he went on to work for the Standard Steel Mill retiring after 30 plus years of service.

He was the former Commander at the VFW POST 9575 in Potters Mill and a Deputy Game Protector in Centre County. Walter was also the Treasurer of the Veteran Assistance Fund in Centre Hall. One of his favorite hobbies was photographing wildlife.

Walter is survived by his lifetime companion, Cindy Hoar of Centre Hall; two sons. Michael Mayes (Amy) of Woodbridge, VA, Douglas Mayes (Michele) of Fort Collins, CO; one brother, Donald Mayes (Mardella) of Centre Hall; four grandchildren, Allison, Abbey, Nick and Kate. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 10:00-11:00 AM on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at the Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Services, 1034 Benner Pike, State College, PA the Funeral Service will follow at 11AM with Pastor David Downer officiating. Full Military Honors will be accorded. Burial will be private at the Zion Hill Cemetery in Colyer.
