University Health Services
For students, usually the most convenient option is on-campus medical help. Certain services are covered by your student account, others require payment. The downfall is that during flu season, it can be difficult to get a timely appointment with a doctor. They offer lists of other medical services in the area if your issue requires more immediate attention.
- UHS also offers free Telephone Advice Nurses 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for Penn State students to help you decide if you need urgent care, a clinic appointment, or self-care. They are usually able to offer good advice and suggestions based on your symptoms. Call anytime at (814) 863-4463.
- Make an appointment ahead of time for general health purposes and concerns. Usually, you can get one within 3 or 4 days of calling. Same-day appointments are available for more serious cases. Walk-in or call ahead if you have a serious injury that requires immediate attention. To schedule an appointment, call (814) 863-0774.
- Visit http://www.sa.psu.edu/uhs/basics/basics.cfm for a full A-Z list of the services offered by UHS.
STI, HIV Testing
It's important to know your status on a college campus, especially one with the size and anonymity-factor of Penn State. Several places offer STI (Sexually Transmitted Infections) and HIV testing. Free HIV testing is available in the area.
- UHS offers STI testing on an appointment basis. To discuss symptoms, get more information on STI transmission or prevention, or to speak confidentially with a health adviser, visit the HealthWorks rooms in 19 and 20 Ritenour.
- HIV testing is available on-campus in two ways:
- Regular Clinic visit—can do OraSure Test (new technology that tests for HIV using a simple mouth swab sample) or Blood Test. Costs $30-34, depending on the testing style you choose. Results available in 10 to 14 days. Call (814) 863-0774.
- Through the Office of Health Promotion and Education, it is possible to receive free HIV testing on campus. Only the OraSure Oral Swab option is available through this service. There is no charge for PSU students, as it is funded by the PA Department of Health. Results available in 2 to 3 weeks. Call (814) 865-6538.
Students at Penn state campuses other than University Park may contact the campus health office or other community resources for further information.
