Penn State vs. Temple Recap

Nittany Lions Shut Out Owls, 31 - 0.

The Nittany Lions held Temple scoreless in their 31 - 0 route of the Owls in front of a sold out crowd of 69,029 at Lincoln Financial Field, the largest home crowd in the history of Temple football.


Senior quarterback Anthony Morelli completed 22 of 33 passes for 260-yards and three touchdowns. He was sacked once and threw one interception on the day, but completed his long of the day for 52-yard pass to Derrick Williams.


Williams caught seven balls for a total of 104-yards. Deon Butler caught five for 43-yards and a touchdown. Jordan Norwood only had two catches on the day, both for touchdowns and a total of 37-yards. Terrell Golden caught two for 27-yards and Andrew Quarless had one catch for 22-yards.


Rodney Kinlaw went over the 1,000-yard mark on the season, rushing for a total of 168-yards and a touchdown on 27 carries. He also caught the ball five times for 27-yards. Evan Royster had just one carry on the day for five yards. Brent Carter carried the ball four times for 12 yards.


The Owls were able to drive on Penn State making four red-zone appearances but failing to convert any of them to points. The Nittany Lions on the other hand, scored on four of five red-zone appearances.


Sophomore quarterback Vaughn Chartlon completed 26 of 43 passes with a long of 22-yards gave the Owls flight, but a lack of production on the ground clipped their wings.


Jason Harper and Daryl Robinson combined for a total of 47-yards on the ground. Harper had 26-yards, gaining 16-yards on one carry, while Robinson put up 21-yards, gaining 15-yards on one carry. Harper also caught the ball five times for 30-yards, Robinson caught it three times for 26-yards.


However, Chartlon was able to spread the ball around through the air hitting Bruce Francis six times for 75-yards, Travis Shelton five times for 50-yards, Kevin Armstrong four times for 32-yards, Josh Bundy twice for 21-yards and Marquise Liverpool once for four-yards.


Penn State put up 202-yards on the ground and 260-yards through the air for a total of 462-yards. Temple was able to put up half of that as the Nittany Lion defense held the Owls to just four-yards rushing. The Owls were able to put up 238-yards through the air for a total of 242-yards of offense.


Defensively, the Lions were lead by Dan Connor, who had 18 total tackles, eleven solo and seven assisted with 1.5-sacks for seven-yards. Sean Lee followed with ten total tackles, three solo and seven assisted and two break-ups Lee also returned a fumble for five-yards. Chris Baker had four total tackles two solo and two assisted with 2.5-sacks for 25-yards.


Andre Neblett of the Owls got the only sack for the Owls, taking down Morelli for a six-yard-loss. He also recovered Penn State’s only fumble. Dominique Harris lead the Owls in tackles with 13 total, six solo and seven assisted with .5-tackles-for-loss for three yards. Jamal Schulters and Jaiquaw Jarrett both followed with eleven total tackles.


The Nittany Lions close out regular season play next weekend in East Lansing against Michigan State’s Spartans in the battle for the Land Grant trophy at 3:30pm.
