The YMCA of Centre County and state Rep. Paul Takac, D-College Township, will host a distribution event to celebrate the conclusion of their back-to-school supply drive.

Supplies will be distributed during the event from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday at the Y’s State College Branch, 667 W. Whitehall Rd.

“Every child deserves to start the school year on the right foot, fully equipped for success,” Takac said in a news release. “Over the last several weeks, our office has worked with the community to help ensure that every student in Centre County has the tools they need to thrive.”

The back-to-school event is free and open to the community. In addition to distribution of school supplies, it will feature a Wibit aquatic obstacle course, a cookout, slushies from Sunset Slush Happy Valley and basketball.

“It’s important that we are starting the school year off in a positive and fun way while making sure local children have everything they need to be successful in the classroom,” Jamie SanFilippo, director of community outreach at YMCA of Centre County, said in the release.

Takac’s district office and the Y’s Centre County branches collected supplies like backpacks, pens and pencils and coloring tools from the end of June through Friday.

“This initiative is more than just collecting supplies; it’s about leveling the playing field, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose and investing in our future,” Takac said. “I want to thank everyone who played a role in making this community-driven initiative a resounding success and look forward to continuing to partner with the YMCA of Centre County and our local schools to build a brighter future for all.”
