Centre County Adds 3 COVID-19 Deaths, 107 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 7,305 New Positives

Centre County registered three new COVID-19 deaths and 107 more cases of the virus on Wednesday, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The county has now had 324 deaths attributed to COVID-19 since March 2020. The new cases bring the county’s total to 33,516 (29,839 confirmed and 3,677 probable).

Centre County’s moving seven-day average for new cases is 139, down from 215 a week ago and 251 two weeks ago.

Pennsylvania reported 7,305 new COVID-19 positives on Wednesday to bring the statewide total to 2,674,471. 

It was the fourth consecutive day with fewer than 10,000 new cases statewide. The commonwealth’s seven-day average is 9,861, down from 14,187 a week ago and 22,551 two weeks ago.

With 192 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is now 41,028.

Hospitalizations

Mount Nittany Medical Center has 44 COVID-19 inpatients, one fewer than on Tuesday, with five in intensive care [+2] and two on ventilators.

The patients range in age from 32 to 97, according to Mount Nittany’s COVID-19 inpatient dashboard. Eighteen are fully vaccinated and 26 are not vaccinated.

Statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations continued to decline. According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 4,317 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Pennsylvania, 250 fewer than on Tuesday, with 712 patients in intensive care [-52] and 453 on ventilators [-27].

Nursing and Personal Care Home Cases

Long-term care facilities in Centre County recorded one new COVID-19 case among residents. A total of 20 nursing and personal care homes in the county have had a combined 749 resident cases, 721 employee cases and 182 resident deaths.

Prison cases

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Benner state prison has 20 active COVID-19 cases among inmates and 15 among staff.

Rockview state prison has 24 active inmate cases, one more than on Monday, and 18 among staff [-4].

Both facilities are in Benner Township.

At Benner, 1,470 inmates are fully vaccinated, 13 are partially vaccinated and 196 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 310 are fully vaccinated [+2] and 318 are not vaccinated [-2].

Rockview has 1,707 inmates who are fully vaccinated and 59 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 341 are fully vaccinated and 376 are not vaccinated.

Transmission level

All 67 counties in Pennsylvania are at the highest level for community transmission of COVID-19 on the Centers for Disease Control scale, according to the latest county-level data update.

Transmission levels are based on positivity rate and cases per 100,000 people for the previous seven days. At the substantial and high levels, CDC guidance recommends all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings.

Vaccinations

As of Wednesday morning, 93,097 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 79 since Tuesday, and 14,046 are partially covered [+7]. Booster doses have been administered to 47,269 county residents [+121].

Among the county’s entire population, 68.6% have received at least one dose, 58.4% are fully vaccinated and 49.6% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 73.9% have received at least one dose, 62.6% are fully vaccinated and 52.2% have received a booster.

Statewide, 75.7% of adults and 65.9% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in MedicineMount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.

All individuals age 12 and older are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
