Centre County on Friday reported 31 new COVID-19 cases to bring its total to 3,322 since the first was confirmed in March.
The county also had 224 new negative test results, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. A total of 30,235 patients in Centre County have tested negative for the virus.
Mount Nittany Medical Center currently has 13 COVID-19 hospitalizations, up from six earlier in the week. The patients range in age from 33 to 96 and seven are from long-term care facilities. Because of the increase, the medical center has activated the first step of its ‘surge capacity plan,’ rescheduling elective and non-essential surgeries and procedures that require overnight admission
Local nursing and personal care homes continue to see an uptick in cases, with three new positives among residents and one among employees. Over the past two weeks, long-term care facilities in the county have reported 16 new cases among residents. Since the onset of the pandemic, 11 facilities have reported a total of 53 resident cases, 32 employee cases and nine resident deaths, according to DOH.
For the fifth consecutive week, Centre County has the highest incidence rate in the state, though the number continues to decline, according to DOH’s updated early-warning monitoring dashboard. For the week of Oct. 2-8, the county had an incidence rate of 278.9 cases per 100,000 people, down from 291.1 the previous week. The next closest county is Union at 207.7.
For the first time in a month, Centre County does not have the highest positivity rate in the state over the past seven days. The county’s positivity rate for the week was 7.4%, third-highest in the state and down from 9.4% the prior week.
Statewide, the health department reported 1,380 new positives on Friday, increasing Pennsylvania’s total to 169,308. For the second day in a row, it was the state’s highest single-day total since April 30.
There were 14,662 new negative test results statewide. A total of 1,999,765 patients in Pennsylvania have tested negative for the virus.
An estimated 81% of COVID-19 patients in the state have recovered, according to a DOH calculation.
Across Pennsylvania, 734 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, with 92 requiring use of a ventilator.
The health department reported nine new COVID-19 deaths, bringing the state’s total at 8,308. DOH has reported 12 total COVID-19 deaths for Centre County, the most recent occurring on Wednesday when, the county coroner’s office confirmed, a 90-year-old resident of a long-term care facility died at Mount Nittany Medical Center. Deaths confirmed by the coroner’s office range in age from 74 to 101.
Most COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths have been among patients 65 and older.
Among Pennsylvania’s total cases, 163,321 are confirmed and 5,987 are probable. In Centre County, 3,249 are confirmed and 73 are probable.
