Centre County Adds 99 New COVID-19 Cases

Centre County added 99 new COVID-19 cases on Friday to bring its total to 2,854 since the first was confirmed in March, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The county also had 544 new negative test results. A total of 27,306 patients in Centre County have tested negative for the virus.

According to DOH data, Centre County currently has six COVID-19 hospitalizations, which is unchanged from Thursday.

Centre County nursing and personal care homes reported three new positives among residents and one among employees, bringing their total to 48 resident cases and 27 employee cases across 11 facilities.

In the past two weeks, DOH has a total of 1,224 new cases in Centre County, the vast majority in the State College and University Park zip codes and corresponding to Penn State student testing.

For the fourth consecutive week, Centre County had the highest incidence COVID-19 rate in the state for the past seven days, according to the health department’s early warning monitoring dashboard, which was updated on Friday. For the week of Sept. 25-Oct. 1, Centre County’s rate was 291.1 cases per 100,000 people, down from 322.5 the prior week. The next closest county is Montour at 159.0.

Centre County also had the highest positivity rate in Pennsylvania for the third consecutive week at 9.4%, which was down from 12% the previous week.

Statewide, the health department reported 1,161 new positives on Friday, increasing Pennsylvania’s total to 161,284.

There were 15,332 new negative test results. A total of 1,904,971 patients in Pennsylvania have tested negative for the virus.

An estimated 82% of COVID-19 patients — 132,253 — in the state have recovered, according to a DOH calculation.

Across Pennsylvania, 561 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, with 63 requiring use of a ventilator.

The health department reported 19 new COVID-19 deaths, bringing the state’s total at 8,179. DOH has reported 11 total COVID-19 deaths for Centre County, the most recent on Aug. 14. The coroner’s office has confirmed eight, the most recent reported on Wednesday. DOH reports deaths by county of residency, regardless of where the death occurs, while the coroner’s office reports deaths that occur within the county. Deaths confirmed by the coroner’s office range in age from 74 to 101.

Most COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths have been among patients 65 and older.

Among Pennsylvania’s total cases, 155,906 are confirmed and 5,378 are probable. In Centre County, 2,787 are confirmed and 67 are probable.
