Update: This planned road closure was delayed until Feb. 27 due to the extremely cold weather.

A busy downtown street will be closed to traffic once again because of construction on the Metropolitan Building at the corner of College Avenue and Atherton Street.

The portion of College Avenue between North Atherton Street and Barnard Street will shut down on Monday, Feb. 23. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation says the closure is needed so construction crews can move crane equipment on the job site.

The one-day closure won’t be a major hassle for drivers, but a detour has been planned by PennDOT, according to a news release.

The official detour will direct westbound traffic on College Avenue to South Atherton Street and then to University Drive Extension, from which you will be able to head back to College. There will be orange detour signs in place Monday to guide you along the route.

While this closure will only last one day, the same portion of College Avenue will be shut down next month from March 9 to 11.

The Metropolitan Building, which is being built on the site of the former Arby’s, will be a 12-story mixed-use building. It is expected to include three levels of underground parking with retail/restaurant space on the bottom floor, one floor of office space above that, and housing the rest of the way up.

Progress Development and Metropolitan developer Ara Kervandjian were unavailable for comment on the progress of construction at the site.
