COVID-19 Death Reported at Centre County Nursing Home

The Pennsylvania Department of Health on Saturday reported Centre County’s second death attributed to COVID-19.

A spokesperson for The Oaks at Pleasant Gap confirmed that the deceased patient had been a resident of the senior living community. 

‘The Oaks at Pleasant Gap confirms the death of a resident who was diagnosed with the COVID-19 virus. The resident passed away at a local health care facility,’ said Andrea Schurr, director of mission advancement for Allegheny Lutheran Social Ministries, the nonprofit that operates the facility. ‘Please join us in keeping the resident’s loved ones in prayers. We continue to take every precaution to keep our residents safe by following  public health guidelines.’

Three nursing or personal care homes in the county have had a combined 12 resident and six employee cases. 

Centre County’s first COVID-19 death was an 89-year-old man who died at Mount Nittany Medical Center on April 16.

The county has had 117 confirmed cases of COVID-19 since March 20, with no new positives reported on Saturday.

Statewide, 1,078 new cases were reported on Saturday, bringing Pennsylvania’s total to 55,316. The department also reported 72 new COVID-19 deaths. The commonwealth’s death toll from the virus is now 3,688.

16801 (State College): 27

16803 (State College): 16

16827 (Boalsburg): 9 

16870 (Port Matilda): 8

16828 (Centre Hall), 16866 (Philipsburg), 16844 (Julian), 16841 (Howard), 16852 (Madisonburg) each have 1-4 cases. Specific numbers are not provided for zip codes with four or fewer cases.

Among Centre County’s bordering counties, Huntingdon now has 119 cases, Mifflin has 50, Clinton has 41, Union has 40, Blair has 28 and Clearfield has 24.

A total of 221,791 patients in Pennsylvania have tested negative for COVID-19, including 1,217 people in Centre County. Across the state, 2,284 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, with 482 requiring a ventilator, as of noon on Saturday.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health does not provide data on recovered patients. According to Johns Hopkins University, the United States has had 1,288,569 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 77,344 deaths and 198,993 recoveries.
