The elementary schools in the State College Area School District are up to their ears in plastic bags.
They have been selected to compete in a Plastic Bag Recycling Challenge sponsored by Trex, Weis Markets, Lowe’s, A Bag’s Life, The Centre Region COG and the Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority.
The schools are collecting plastic bags and plastic wrap over an eight week period.
The school that collects the most plastic in the challenge will receive a garden bed made from Trex recycled plastic lumber, compost to fill the garden bed as well as a $50 Weis gift card to purchase seeds.
In addition, all participating schools will receive a bird house and park bench; both made from Trex recycled plastic lumber.
In the first three weeks of the challenge, the schools have collected a total of 1,033 pounds of plastic.
The winning school will be announced on Earth Day which is held on April 22.
