The Nittany Lions couldn’t hang on after making it close in the second half, falling 80-67 in Ann Arbor on Tuesday night.

Penn State fell behind early after several turnovers plagued a normally sound ball handling team.

The Wolverines capitalized and took a quick 14 point lead in the first half. The Nittany Lions punched back and were able to cut the Michigan lead to single digits by halftime. Penn State would trail at the half for the first time in three games, behind 40-33.

The Nittany Lions looked to reverse the trend of slow second half starts and a 10-3 run did just that, cutting the Wolverine lead to only two-points in the early going. Guards DJ Newbill and Tim Frazier were strong all night, both posting 17-point outings. Penn State’s Donovon Jack contributed 12 points. Michigan hit one too many timely shots though to push the lead back out to double figures soon after Penn State’s early surge.

Penn State would cut the lead to single digits in the final minutes, but couldn’t make it a game again as a talented Michigan squad made all the right plays to keep a surging Penn State team out of reach.

The Wolverines were led by Nik Stauskas and his 21 points.

The Nittany Lions are back in action on the road against Purdue this Saturday at 7 p.m.
