Penn State hockey players Casey Bailey and Taylor Holstrom have both been nominated for the 2015 Hobey Baker Memorial Award, what is essentially college hockey’s version of the Heisman Trophy. The award recognizes the best player in college hockey, but is decided by fan vote.
Bailey and Holstrom become the first Penn State players in program history to be nominated for the award. The two linemates have provided the Nittany Lions with a goal and assist tandem that has helped propel Penn State to a strong start this season.
Casey Bailey (11 G, 8 A) is tied for 28th in the nation with 19 points and is tied for 11th in goals. Holstrom (4 G, 14 A) is tied for 38th in points and 10th in assists. Holstrom has tallied assists on many of Bailey’s goals making their collective success largely the result of each other rather than simply individual play.
Bailey and Holstrom aren’t new to the award spotlight. They were named the Big Ten’s First and Third Stars of the Week respectively, following a weekend series split against No. 4 UMass-Lowell earlier in the season.
The nomination list totals with 59 players, including the nation’s leading points scorer and projected top NHL draft pick Jack Eichel of Boston University. In all likelihood Eichel will win the award, but that takes nothing away from Bailey and Holstrom’s nomination, or more importantly, their outstanding performance on the ice so far this season.
