The Penn State women’s volleyball team advanced to the third round of the NCAA tournament in Rec Hall on Saturday night with a 3-0 sweep over the Bowling Green Falcons.

The Lions’ win came despite the team’s 12 serving errors.

‘Other than the serving in the last game I thought we played pretty well,’ coach Russ Rose said.

Sophomore Micha Hancock led the Nittany Lions with 10 aces on Friday night against Binghamton and had five on Saturday. The rest of the Lions struggled on Saturday night with their serves, which gave Bowling Green 12 points when it served the ball into the net.

Bowling Green, however, was not able to capitalize on Penn State’s miscues, something freshman outside hitter Megan Courtney attributed to the fans.

‘It’s kind of scary coming in here and playing, but also our block is kind of scary because we’re a lot taller than them and our defense is good, so I would credit my team but also the entire environment,’ Courtney said.

‘I felt like they gave us a lot of opportunities with their missed serves. We just weren’t able to string points together,’ said Bowling Green junior Laura Avila.

The Nittany Lions doubled Bowling Green in serving errors, but they also outscored the Falcons, 10-1 on servicing aces.

Penn State will take on 16th-seeded Kentucky on Friday at Purdue.
