Drivers on Whitehall Road and the University Drive Extension may encounter some delays this week, the state Department of Transportation announced.

A three-mile stretch of those roads is undergoing a $10.3 million widening-and-improvement project. Work this week is expected to include continued installation of a temporary traffic signal at Waupelani Drive, the installation of a silt barrier fence, and tree trimming, according to a news release.

Between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. this week, flaggers will control traffic at various locations throughout the construction area, PennDOT noted.

The overall project, stretching from West College Avenue in Ferguson Township to Atherton Street in State College borough, is scheduled for completion in fall 2013. Improvements, in addition to road-widening work, will include a center left-turn lane, marked bicycle lanes, new traffic signals, better drainage, waterline relocation and fresh paving, PennDOT reported.
