Police were dispatched to investigate reports of a suspicious package south of Medlar Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Porter Road was temporarily closed from Curtin Road to Hastings Road while police investigated the report.

Bomb technicians were on the scene by 4 p.m. from the Penn State Hazardous Material Response team to check on the package, which employees found while pulling up fence posts near the sustainability center.

A bomb-defusing robot was sent to check the package, and there was eventually a controlled detonation by the robot, producing an audible explosion in the area.

University spokesperson Reidar Jensen said there was nothing in the package and bomb technicians reportedly determined that there was no threat.

Jensen noted that this is in isolated incident, and the investigation is ongoing, adding that there was no danger to the community at any point in time.
