A State College-area man led local police on a car chase that ended in early Saturday in Harris Township, borough police said.

Penn State police first stopped the motorist — later identified as Daniel J. McNulty — about 2:40 a.m. Saturday at Fraser Street and Beaver Avenue in State College, police said.

McNulty soon fled the scene, leading police — including borough officers — on a pursuit through College Township, back to Atherton Street and finally to Hess Field, off state Route 45 in Harris Township, according to police reports.

Authorities laid spikes across the road at the Atherton Street-Branch Road intersection and at Route 45, attempting to slow McNulty, police said.

When his vehicle came to a stop at Hess Field, they said, he fled into some nearby woods.

A canine unit was summoned. And when McNulty emerged from the wooded area the next morning, police said, he was taken into custody.

Police said McNulty, in his early 20s, faces charges of aggravated assault, eluding police and traffic violations. At one point during the incident, police said, McNulty tried to strike an officer.

McNulty was arraigned before District Judge Thomas Jordan and lodged in the Centre County Correctional Facility, where he remained Monday afternoon, according to a prison roster.

The detailed criminal complaint — outlining more specifics in the case — was not immediately available.
