Media reports indicating that Penn State Head Football Coach Bill O’Brien has accepted the top job with the Houston Texans has unleashed a controversy — much of it playing out on social media.
Twitter and Facebook feeds lit up late New Year’s Eve, moments after those reports were circulated.
Some fans expressed their thanks to O’Brien for turning around a football program that was in disarray when he was hired two years ago.
Others are angry that O’Brien left town relatively soon. They want to know why O’Brien is walking away from players who stayed with the program despite the ugly situation created by the Jerry Sandusky scandal.
O’Brien held the team together and stressed the importance of loyalty and dedication. Some people think O’Brien is being disloyal, leaving the players he recruited to play under his leadership.
Some Penn State football players are already weighing in with their thoughts too.
Here is a sampling of some of their comments on Twitter:
I’ll love Coach Obrien forever. He will always be apart of Penn State. One of the greatest men I’ve ever known. #PennStateForever
